How to plant another round

Fast crops like lettuce, radishes, beans and cilantro are all ready at once. Sowing a small new batch every couple of weeks keeps them coming.

Words to know

Succession planting:
Sowing small batches a few weeks apart instead of all at once.

How to do it

  1. Sow a short row or a few squares, not the whole garden.
  2. Use an empty space, or the spot you just finished picking.
  3. Keep going until the job stops appearing — later sowings wouldn't be ready before frost.

Good to know

  • In hot weather, lettuce and cilantro flower and turn bitter quickly. A bit of afternoon shade helps, or wait for cooler fall weather.
